Equalities and differences between two cultures.

4th grade in Gug School about being a child in a slum in Kenya or in Denmark.

We started with reading the material: 'Hip hop on a slumtop' which was published in 2009. We have planned to work with the topic over the next 4 years. We will establish contact to friendship classes on schools in Kibera, Kenya. O3V runs the project.

We began with a full week, and the classes were divided into groups across classes. The groups had to rotate between four workshops. All students had the same introduction. Via Google, pc, projector and screen the 'travelled' from Gug to Kibera. They saw, where Kenya is on the map, what the name of the capital is etc.

The students had the students' books to 'Hip hop on a slumtop'. Then they had to find informations about the country in pairs. They should also look at photos and get an impression. They were asked to compare what they knew about Denmark with the new information about Kenya. At the end of the introduction they watched the movie 'Kibera - Kenya' about two children in Kibera.

Cooking workshop
The students were handed out recipes with dishes from Kenya. The ingredients were compared to ingredients in Danish dishes. They cooked, and they smelled and they tasted. Dishwashing was done without running water from a tap. They did it with boiled water in a bucket.

Craft workshop
The students produced small dolls in filt and braided leather bracelets. They discussed the things they cared for (toys, games, cellphones etc.). They also discussed how to get these things. Thereafter they reflected on how children in Kibera can get the things, that they care for.

Musical workshop
The students had a taste of various genres of music. They discussed which kind of music makes them happy. They were divided into smaller groups, and asked to create texts and rhymes to a rap song. This song were to be presented to the others in the workshop.

Animals in Kenya - creative workshop
The students told which animals, that live in Kenya. They checked out on the net, if it were the correct animals they had mentioned. They noted which animals live wild in Denmark. They made planches on wild life in the two countries, using the colours that pertain to Kenya. They also cut out animals in cardboard.
